With a career already marked by major recognition, Pete Cater is preparing to release a new EP titled West Side Story on May 1st, 2026. The project will be followed by two May performances as part of The Great Drum Show, offering fans a chance to see the drummer live soon after the release.
West Side Story was recorded in a setting that is far from typical for a jazz release of this calibre. Cater chose a school hall during the summer break, yet the outcome is described as having the depth and clarity associated with top-tier studio work. The EP also features a lineup of exceptional musicians, underlining Cater’s long-standing dedication to high musical standards.
Cater’s path in jazz began early. Born in Staffordshire in 1963, he was raised around the music by his father, a semi-professional drummer, and was already performing live as a teenager. At 29, he made the move to London, a key decision that helped shape a career grounded in self-belief, artistic integrity and independence.
Over the years, that career has brought major honours. Cater was voted the 5th Best Jazz Drummer in the World by Rhythm Magazine readers and has won awards including Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards and Best Drummer at the Radio 2 National Big Band Contest. Now living in West Sussex, he remains active not only as a performer but also through his record label, which supports independent artists and releases.
His upcoming live dates are set for May 17th at Pizza Express, Soho, and May 20th at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh. Known for his energetic stage presence and outspoken support for independent music, fitness and wellbeing, Cater continues to bring a broad perspective to his work. The arrival of West Side Story points to an artist still moving forward, still refining his craft, and still making his mark on contemporary jazz.
