If things had panned out slightly differently, Amey St. Cyr might have been a 90s dance legend. She was certainly very close, teetering on the edge of musical success in the early 90s, providing vocals for The Thompson Twins and Baby Ford as well as a member of her own Acid Jazz band, who had supported Jamiroquai at their now legendary gig at the Garage in the early 90s.
When the band was offered a record deal by Acid Jazz Records, Amey St. Cyr thought she’d struck gold. As they say, life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans, and she found out that she was pregnant with her daughter just a few days after the life-changing offer.
Amey chose to delay signing the record deal until after she’d had her baby daughter. However, life intervened again (and this time, in a decidedly less pleasant way) and Amey St. Cyr developed crippling post-natal depression. The recovery was drawn-out and the band, sadly, broke up. This devastating loss caused Amey St. Clair to spiral, and in an attempt to cope she began to abuse both drugs and alcohol.
However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, she is back with her first solo release ‘Wild World’. The track channels the 90s house music that originally brought her to the scene twenty-five years ago, and has the same upbeat, clubby vibe that characterises that era of house.
The message of the song is similarly positive and despite the retro sound, has present-day resonances. She describes ‘Wild World’ as a comment on ‘social inequality’ mixed with positive and uplifting lyrics to help us all out of the doldrums in these challenging days of austerity. While we think it might take a bit more than a (admittedly very catchy) 90s-inspired house track to make us feel good about the current state of the government, surrounding ourselves with such positive music can’t hurt!
