In his latest single as avant-pop project Ex Mykah, Colombian/Cuban American artist Bryan Senti explores the effects of the growing opioid epidemic across the USA.
Senti explains:
‘Many friends and idols have passed over the years do to various forms of addiction and it took me a while to figure out a way to discuss that in a song. It finally dawned on me that trapping this kind of lyrical message in a song that could be played in a club where one does such things was the most eloquent way to go. That said, musically the track is inspired by personal psychedelic trips and pulls from dark wave, diplo and hip-hop.’
The track anticipates the release of his dynamic and thought-provoking debut album ‘16,17’, set for release via Kowloon Records on November 30th. Produced alongside Grammy winner Justin Moshkevich and John Hull, it cycles through various social themes in American society today, from drug abuse to social class, meshing haunting hip-hop structures with leftfield pop flourishes, whilst taking aim at the toxic, hypocritical pedantry embedded into our politics and religion. The music itself claims a broad range of influences, most notably conscious rap and R&B icons like Kendrick Lamar & Frank Ocean but also the music of Beach House, Funkadelic, Simple Minds, Cream, and Beck among others. Guesting on the record is the artist Samantha Urbani (Friends, Blood Orange, Samantha Urbani).
