More than 20 years ago, Carmelo Alfano streamed a live gig from London using a dial-up internet connection. At a time when online concert broadcasts were far from routine, the experiment attracted the attention of Sky News, which sent a crew to film the event. A video still exists on YouTube, documenting an early attempt to use the internet to connect a live performer with an audience beyond the venue.
The broadcast represents one strand of a varied career. Based in London, Alfano has worked as an artist, actor and television sound engineer, while his band, Alfano, performed at numerous established venues in the capital. The group also supported James Blunt and briefly shared his management. These experiences placed Carmelo within both the performing and technical sides of the entertainment industry.
His band also connects his story to electronic project Sundae Club. Colin, Alfano’s keyboard player at the time, formed the project with producer George Shilling after the two met at an Elvis-themed fancy-dress party. Their subsequent Sunday studio sessions developed into a regular collaboration influenced by Lemon Jelly. Sundae Club went on to secure a publishing deal, have music used on GMTV and write music for ITV UEFA Champions League Weekly.
Alfano is now preparing to release “Is This You?” on 1 September 2026. His early streaming experiment is not presented as a description of the forthcoming single’s sound, but it offers an insight into his willingness to find new ways of working. Alongside his live experience and vocal training, that practical curiosity is a recurring feature of his musical journey.
