Joe Kelly & The Royal Pharmacy, based in Newport, are back with their bold second album, Cast Me Down. The record, set for release on April 11th via Dirty Carrot Records, pushes their genre-blending sound even further. This time, they combine soul, garage, and surf rock with an experimental twist.
A Bold Evolution in Sound
Cast Me Down breaks away from the usual “difficult second album” pattern. While World On Fire debuted just last year, much of Cast Me Down was already in progress, making it feel like a natural and audacious evolution of their sound. This album embraces risk, refusing to play it safe.
What to Expect From the Album
Opening with familiar indie-Americana tones, the album quickly transitions into uncharted sonic territory. You’ll hear psychedelic swirls, gritty garage grooves, and soulful melodies, all creating an exciting listening experience. Influences from The Zombies, The Raconteurs, and Father John Misty are evident, while Arctic Monkeys’ Rancho De La Luna vibes and the dreamlike quality of Abbey Road also come through.

The album’s title track, Cast Me Down, is now available for streaming. The song kicks off the album with its surf-inspired rhythm and Joe Kelly’s raw, passionate vocals. It’s an ideal introduction to the diverse sounds that the album explores.

Special Collaborations on Cast Me Down
Produced by Jon Greening, Cast Me Down sees Kelly and The Royal Pharmacy joined by Erin McNamara, whose vocals add depth to the record. Additionally, Scott McKeon from Rusty Shackle delivers a stunning violin performance on the psychedelic closer, Living Daylights.
What’s Next for Joe Kelly?
Looking ahead, Joe Kelly is already working on his third album, with over 30 new tracks in the demo stage. However, for now, fans can enjoy Cast Me Down, which will be available on vinyl, CD, and all major streaming platforms starting April 11th.
