Night Hymns’ new single ‘Blue Bottle’ is a testament to the enduring sounds of classic Rock & Roll.
Drawing on influences from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Kinks, this track fuses traditional songwriting structures with hard rock sounds. The song was inspired by a trip to San Francisco, where Night Hymns found a café named ‘Blue Bottle’.
As Night Hymns explains, “My wanderlust first of all, the secret wish to throw everything out of the window and just get on the road. But if you ask me to dig deeper, there is a bit of influence from both sides of the Atlantic, especially in the lyrics. I got the idea in a cafe called “Blue Bottle” on a trip to San Francisco. The name just tickled me because it reminded me of a fat fly, probably because the cafe was not located in the tidiest corner of the city. On the other hand, the poet William Blake has written a poem called “The Fly” in his Songs of Experience, and I have always found the finishing lines amusing ( “Then am I / A happy fly / If I live / Or if I die). So when I saw the name “Blue Bottle” I immediately decided to write my own anthem about a happy fly.”
The accompanying music video uses dynamic handheld footage of Night Hymns performing the song, surrounded by a slick LED blue. Whilst the production and techniques are modern, the classic influences are undeniable.
Blue Bottle follows Night Hymns’ three earlier singles, Shine On, Sans Souci, and Araby, which were released last year. With his impressive portfolio of work, it is clear that Night Hymns is a talent to watch, and that Rock & Roll is far from dead.
