Remastering his single ‘Shadow Trip’ to bring it fresh life in the modern age with revised focus, we picked the brain of the man behind it all…
STTR: Do you think there’s a method to writing a song that’s ‘addictive’?
I do not think there is a specific method to writing a song that’s “addictive” but I think that music with certain characteristics can become “addictive”. For example music with good grooves, nice and plaisant sounds, nice and mellow melodies, nice voices. With that does not necessary mean that the music become “addictive” but with the help of media and music industries there is a chance that it becomes so. On the other hand, nowadays, one song can be “addictive” but just for a while because I thing that most of them do not have a “soul” within. My aim would be rather to do music that also gets to people’s souls and become cult, evergreen, and not disappearing after a period of time.
STTR: What’s a song that, to you, is ‘addictive’ and why?
Considering what above, any songs that is trendy, include those characteristics already described, and becomes popular is somehow “addictive”. But for me “addictive” could be song like “Imagine” of John Lennon, because they go to people’s hearts and souls.
STTR: Does writing music come naturally to you? Or do you have a process?
It depends. Sometimes it happens that with the right moment of inspiration I am able to compose a track in few days. But there are other tracks that could take even years to be finished.
STTR: Who or what is your main source of inspiration?
Imagination and creativity.
STTR: How would you describe the way rhythm is used within your music?
I like rhythms and grooves but I do not think they are always necessary to support the sounds and messages within my music. Sometimes are used to enphasise sounds, sometimes to push the listeners to move or to enter in a sort of meditative status together with repetitive sounds.
STTR: The music video for Shadow Trip has some pretty mind-bending visuals, do you think its important to have strong visual elements to your music?
Not really. I do not think it is really important to have strong visual elements to my music. I simply created the video myself, starting and using only the cover art of the track (also done by myself). It was a nice exercise to see what I could do with that and with no deep knowledge in video editing.
STTR: Did you have a particular ‘listener’ in mind when writing Shadow Trip?
Not really. But trip hop listeners might appreciate that as well as any type of listener that appreciate mellow/chilling music as well as the message within it.
STTR: What is planned for the future of Reed Blue?
More music, more involvement in music and of course all the best.
