Andrew Small has worked as one of the most respected session musicians in the UK for the last 25 years, working as both drummer and musical director for the likes of Massive Attack, Kylie Minogue, Il Divo and Courtney Pine. Now, at long last, he has branched out to release the first album under his own name, “What Happens Now?”, an album of jazz-soul-funk which both satisfies audiences well versed in those styles, as well as those who are somewhat newer to the genres.

Opener, “Yummy” give a (ahem) flavour of the album, with a summery blend of horns, guitars, sax and keyboards, with Andrew’s own driving but unobtrusive drumming style. This is not an album by a drummer who pushes his accompanying musicians to one side: it works as a single entity, with precision timing and fluidity demonstrated throughout. Check out a snippet of “If Only” below – spine-tingling and uplifting, it’s music that’s perfect for driving, grooving and relaxing to (though not, we recommend, at the same time!)
